Simpleton Gonrad Broth is the de-facto poet-laureate of Thredonia, a 54-person island where the winds are so loud that the native accent is yelling. Bored with his provincial homeland, he wishes nothing more than to visit America, and once there, master “moving pictures”.
A miraculous, inexplicable grant of half a million dollars brings Gonrad to the US, where he is immediately scammed out of the money and left adrift and alone. In this vacuum, he begins to construct a film grammar from scratch, growing increasingly ambitious until sudden success leaves him lost in an industry he can’t comprehend.
